The Research - Based Argument Essay
This unit is continued from Unit 3 Writing. We began in March and are taking it slow to make sure we get all the elements necessary.
March 31-April 4: This week we focused on "unpacking evidence". That means we used the evidence we had collected during our research to make our argument stronger. But in order to do that, we had to really explain to our reader how that evidence supported our reasons.
April 7-April 11: We focused on conferencing with each other and with Mrs. Nallo to make our writing piece stronger. We made sure our evidence didn't overlap and that we were using the strongest evidence to support our reasons. We worked on elaborating and adding important details.
April 14-April 18: Spring Break
April 21-May 9: We have done a lot of revising and editing to make our writing the best it can be! We started with revamping our lead to make them really hook the reader, instead of just telling our thesis statement. Then we worked on really paraphrasing instead of copying from our resources. Next, it was important for us to review transition words - there are so many transitions in writing! We transition from our thoughts to the evidence, we transition from one reason to the next....it all takes special types of words to help our reader see and understand the flow of the paper. Finally, we have been working on using quotations to bolster our argument. It was important that we choose the best quotations to enhance our argument. Then it was important that we choose the most important parts of the quotation so that it really stands out. Most importantly, we had to punctuate our quotations accurately. On May 9, we printed our draft so that we could see what it looked like and sounded like. Many of us were surprised to find places to revise our paper again!
We have been completing our end of year on-demand writing assessments.
