Nature's Fury WebQuest
You will be working with a partner to complete a WebQuest about Nature's Fury. You and your partner will choose a topic (listed below), then use the links to gather information about your topic. You will spend time each day reading and working on your research. While you are doing your research, you are to look for connections between the texts we read in class and the research you are completing.
Purpose of the Research Project
While reading a variety of texts about destructive forces of nature, students will research topics about natural disasters to enhance their understanding of nature's fury. We will focus on better understanding the effects of weather phenomenon on the land and the people. This project will help prepare fifth graders for middle school, where they will have to research topics as well as cite resources.
Common Core Standards
RI5.1 - Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
RI5.3 - Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information from the text.
RI5.4 - Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.
RI5.6 - Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent.
RI5.7 - Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
RI5.9 - Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
W5.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
W5.6 - With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.
W5.7 - Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
W5.8 - Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources.
Steps to Completing the Project
1. Choose a topic with your partner. No two partnerships may research the same topic.
2. You are to work on your research project daily with your partner.
3. Be sure to keep notes and RECORD your resources.
4. You and your partner will need to come up with four questions about your topic. For example, if your topic is hurricanes, one question you might have is "How do hurricanes form?" The question can be researched and will give you a better understanding of nature's forces.
5. We will discuss your progress in groups, as well as how your research applies to what we are reading in class. It is expected that you will take notes each day.
6. To present your research, you will be creating a power point presentation or a prezi. You will create your presentation with your partner and your presentation will answer your research questions.
