Poetry
This unit focuses on reading and understanding poetry and poetic elements. We begin by looking at the structure of poetry and then analyze those structures through the reading of poetry. We then examine figurative language to better understand it and to understand how it is used to express the writer's ideas in poetry. From there, we will study 4 different types of poetry (cinquain, haiku, acrostic, and narrative). We will be reading a variety of poems from a variety of sources throughout this unit and students will be keeping it all in their reading binder. For vocabulary associated with this unit, please refer to the vocabulary tab at the top of this page.
At the end of our 10 day study of poetry, we will have a "Poetry Slam" in our classroom where students will be able to share poems they have written during this unit. We will also share cookies and juice.
